You can buy a harness, rope, runners and carabiners that could protect a fall, but you would also need a belayer on the ground to belay the rope and lock it off in the event of a fall. This gear would cost at least $300 - $400 and is the same gear used to protect a rock climber.

Of course, your protection is only as good as the strength of the tree and the quality of your belay. Climb safe.

Good Luck

You might be able to cobble some sort of protection together from a rock climbing harness and an add-on for doing 'via ferrata' such as the petzl zyper vertigo (look it up)

A couple of years ago we had a tree climbing group rent our wall for some training (it was a pretty novel site for the others in attendance that evening). While there are a lot of parallels it should be noted that it is still a separate school of climbing that would need the proper training beforehand.
