I am about to go to a school camp soon and it has activities which includes heights. How can l overcome my fear?

can you find a local club that does lesson in rock climbing, a way to beat the fear is to learn about it first, from the beginning, i.e small steps, then bigger until the fear finally goes. That is the only way l have learned to conquer some very serious debilitating phobias, fears.

Fear of heights is a perfect;y natural defence mechanism. You find however that with practice you can overcome it.On a school camp they will be very careful with safety, & you will most likely have a top rope so even if you fall you wo not get hurt.

being afraid of height is a perfectly normal thing, what u do with that fear is what causes the problems. Frankly speaking, l will not climb with a person that does not have a little fear. Fear keeps a body alive.

The biggest thing to do about fear is to develop trust. Trust in the equipment, trust in the instructors & trust in ur climbing friends. Pay very close attention to all that is being taught. There should be a far amount of testing by yourself as to how the ropes & harnesses feel before u r sent up or down a wall.

l remember the first time l ever repelled. The feeling of fear that overcomes all of ur senses is over whelming. The part that is the worst is letting yourself go over the edge. Once u have, the fear is gone. Hopefully the instructions will include practice tests that show u that the ropes will stop ur falls.

Enjoy, have fun, & do not worry, a little fear is healthy!

Nearly everyone has a fear of heights - whether it is 20ft off the ground or 2000ft, at some point everyone has a natural fear of heights. l would be worried if u did not have any fear - it is a self preservation mechanism that will keep u from getting hurt.

As u learn how to climb, u will develop trust in ur belayer & in the safety equipment - & as u do u will realize that there is no reason for overwhelming fear. You may not get rid of ur fear completely (and u should not expect that) but u will be able to overcome it.

Good Luck

l definitely understand where ur coming from. Everyone is afraid of heights, some more than others. l love climbing. Sometimes l get on the wall & have to come down because l get too scared. Other times the height does not effect me at all.

l have realized, through experience, that it is all about how u approach the climb. Height should be the last thing on ur mind. DO NOT go out there expecting to fail become frightened. You also should not think about success because u may still 'psyche' yourself out. The only thing u need to think about is how much fun its going to be getting on that wall. Once ur on the wall u need to keep thinking like this. Do not think about height or failure, think man this is so cool!

If while u r on the wall u become scared, then u must take that fear & use it to ur benefit. If u start thinking about the height, then u must take that feeling of fear & use it to propel you. Think to yourself, ''man! this so cool!! l can not believe l am doing this!'' Always think positive, it is very easy to think negatively & it is very hard to stop thinking negatively. Think about how proud of yourself u will be when this is over. Think about the feeling of accomplishment & think about how giving up will make u feel unaccomplished.

Remember how safe climbing gear is. You r extremely safe while top roping (which l am assuming u will be top roping). There is almost no chance of injury & the climbing gear holding u up could probably hold a car. You r more likely to have a wheel on ur car randomly come unscrewed than have any climbing gear break.

So remember, top roping is VERY safe & ur fear of heights is an obstacle which is easily overcome. Fear can not hurt you, its ur mind playing tricks on you. Telling u that u r in danger. Your not going to be in danger though! Do not stress over whether or not u will become scared, just relax & have fun!
