I've been climbing for a couple of years, but recently I've started noticing a fair amount of pain in my finger joints after I've really worked them out by climbing. I've let them rest for a month now from climbing so hopefully they might have recovered or something, but when i've been messing about climbing a tree or pullups on a goalpost or something they still hurt a bit, so i'm a bit worried that it is some form of arthritis or something.
anyone got any experience with this?
I am 21, to answer someone below.
l used to train hard three times a week pushing for 6B, then had to slow down a lot because of exams. once l restarted l again went for 6Bs, but my fingers had probably weakened in the time off so that might not've been a good idea..

anyone know any good warm up exercises for fingers?
thanks to all answerers, one thing l must add in response to somethough is that fingers do not have muscles in them, only tendons linked to muscles in your forearm. Of course it is reasonable for these forearm muscles to hurt after exercise as all muscles do, yet it is the fingers themselves that hurt..

My fingers are sometimes a bit stiff, but you should try some finger stretches
maybe go to your doctor, have them check it out
Pain is your body telling you there is something wrong. Do not ignore it.

my fingers get cut up and sore, but not to the extent where they hurt after a months break. arthritis was my first thought :/
how old are you?

and l would go to doctor and explain your situation, they might be able to give you something that will ease the pain.

l see 2 possible issues here:
1) You mentioned that u took time off then came back & just expected to be at the same level that u used to be, & that is when the pain began. A lot of climbers do this & it results in injury & blown tendons. Your technique may be sound, but ur strength could have been lost in the time u were away. l would drop a couple skill levels to redevelop those muscles.
2) A lot of climbers fall into the trap that ''squeeze'' strength is all that matters. And neglect to develop the ''opening'' muscles to create balance.
Example: Ask a person complaining of lower back pain, when asked if they work their abs they say, ''no. my back is what hurts & is weak.'' It is a misunderstanding of the body is mechanics. Balance is key to true strength & reducing injury.
There r hand exercises that allow u to develop the muscles that control ''opening'' ur hands. This will provide the balance that is needed.

In the end, know how ur body works, & dont push things if ur body is not responding. You could be pushing an injury beyond repair. You r still very young, u have time. Dont hurt yourself to the extent that u wont be able to continue to enjoy ur passions.

l am with bluebooooo on this one, it is really hard on the nails, but my manicurist loves me! Like any muscle in the body finger muscles are no exception. exercise is good, too much is not. There is entirely new world of pain when you learn to rock climb. l just accept that!

You better watch it. You could be developing a nasty case of tendonitis, which could take a very long time to cure. In other words, you're overdoing it, there is actually a limit to what your body will put up with. If the pain continues, you might have to go see a doctor for treatment to reduce the inflammation. And he is likely to tell you to lay of all climbing until the problem is completely cured--which could take months or even longer.
