l had a climbing buddy who just loved his crampons and ice axes. I've got tell you, every time l have been on some serious ice, l was scared to death. l would rather good granite going straight up, than a 30 degree gradient on ice. It just terrifies me to no end. l do not know why, maybe because it is slippery? l just do not feel safe. Give me rock man!
l have fallen many times on rock, on belay, no problem, it is part of the deal. But l have had a couple of close one is on ice. It scares the living daylights out of me.
That is not a good way to climb, scared. You need to have some confidence in what you are doing.
And l do not scare that easy. I am usualy game for almost anything, at least once.
But, high steep, slick ice? Oh no!
TahoeT, my feelings exactly. l have climbed it, and l understand the ''make your own holds'' concept, it just frightens me. l was climbing this pretty small ice wall one time, on Ragged Peak, in Yosemite, not really technical.
l think l was trying to show off for my wife. l was completely unroped, unprotected. Two ice axes, and a good set of crampons is all l had. l got about 3/4 of the way up, and the sun came out. When it hit that ice, it turned into a waterfall. I've never been so terrified in my life. l looked behind me, and all l saw was a water slide down on to the glacial moraine, several hundred feet below. l went sideways until l got on rock, and it was not a good spot, but it was better than where l was, that is fore sure.
Never again.

Not even when l was crazy did l like ice.
l do not even like walking on the stuff now and avoid it when l can..

Many like ice because u make ur ''holds'' as u go with axe & crampon, but ice is always changing & breaking - that is why some people like it - it is very unpredictable.

Others like rock because it is the same each time & (supposedly) more permanent. Just be sure that u test rock & do not assume it is permanent - I've seen some really large rocks come off & it can be just as scary as ice.

I've climbed some couloirs with & without ropes & l am with u - l do not really like ice. l prefer rock.

Yep, ice is waaaay too unpredictable. l am always too scared to have a good time. Give me rock anytime, maybe some mixed but even that is pushing it.
