If you have an RE l store near you, I'd highly recommend checking them out as they will be able to fit you into gear.

Black Diamond harnesses are good and are inexpensive.
La Sportiva shoes are grippy and comfortable.

I'd also recommend some good pants. Basketball shorts wo not do. Stay away from anything slick.
Also, a good chalk bag is nice.

The basic gear that u would need for all types of rock climbing (gym, top rope, lead, trad) would be:

Harness - Check out Petzl, Black Diamond, Metolius, & Singing Rock (best price if on a budget)

Shoes - l like La Sportiva because they fit me the best, but u will have to try on different brands to see what works for you.

Locking Carabineer / Belay device - Black Diamond 'biner & Black Diamond ATC XP (this one is the easiest & best)

Helmet - if climbing outdoors, get a helmet - Petzl is best

Of course, if u already know the size u need getting this stuff on-line will save u money - check out these sites:

Good Luck

Most harnesses r much of a muchness, there is not a great deal companies can do to distinguish between the products, so whatever is best for ur budget will do. l personally like my wildcountry ziplock elite.

Rock shoes will Definitely be a matter of trying on a bunch of different pairs in a store, there is no way u can do it online or by post (believe me, l got a great staff deal less than half price on a pair of shoes, & regretted it ever since, they do not fit well!). Red Chili Spirits r a great beginners shoe though.

Any locking carabiner & any form of belay device will do. Again, most carabiners r almost identical so it really does not matter what u get. There r different sorts of belay devices, some people prefer the metal '8' shaped ones, l think they're rubbish personally, just a standard ATC (like the DMM 'Bug') will be fine.

Chalk bags r stupidly expensive in climbing shops, alpkit.com does a fine one for four pounds, l am sure there r cheap ones elsewhere on the net too. Chalk balls cost about two pound.

For outdoors u will need a helmet too, Camp Rock Star is about the cheapest u can get at about 35 pounds, but the petzl elios at around fourty is about the best budget one u can get.

Your own rope & rope bag can be useful when u want to start leading, just go for whatever suits ur budget best. The rope bag is useful for keeping the rope clean & dry when outdoors.

For leading sport u will need a set of quickdraws, eight is a good number for lots of routes, u maybe can get them for about a tenner each.
You will also need a locking carabiner, though u can use ur belay one, & a sling (120mm is a good length). This is for setting up the rope for lowering off once u reach the top.
Slings r maybe a fiver for that length.

For trad (non-bolted routes) climbing, u will need a set of nuts size 1-10, & then some cams (Friends) or hexes (or both), which can vary hugely in price depending on what sizes u get. Mid-size friends & hexes r the most useful. You also might want some cord (5 or 6mm) to make a prussick or two out of (for abseiling), 1m to 1.5m of cord is a good amount for this (though note that abseiling requires two carabiners, one for the belay device & one for the prussick as the backup).

Ice climbing involves a lot more gear, l guess you're not on that yet!

Hope that helps, enjoy the climbing!
