l went to a little talk at a state park given by a climbing school owner and he was describing drilling into rock and using bolts. l thought this was very old school and destructive. It was Sylvan Rocks climbing school out of the Black Hills.

you are mostly right. while bolts are used less than before, they are set on common routes. its almost unheard of your you to set your own, but some climbing places will provide bolts for you to clip into. It can make it safer and lets people take less equipment with them.
