Most of the plans l have found are about building an indoor climbing wall, and I am not sure how l would build one outside.

l have a friend who spent $300,000 on a rock climbing wall it is huge! But looks awesome. l am guessing you do not have $300,000, but you still can buy a small one online, try ebay, and make it yourself the directions are included in the shipped package l believe, but if you buy one have fun and e-mail me and tell me wht happens, well only if you want 2 lolz. sorry i'm actin immature right now, i'm 14 btw.

l would think that an outdoor wall would be the same as building an indoor wall - large main beams (like 6 x 8 or 6 x 10 headers) ancored to a foundation with plywood over them & blind nuts to attach the climbing holds. l would also anchor the top of the wall back to another burried foundation with a very strong 1/4'' steel cable up to the belay point.

l would also think about building a ''corner'' wall that had an inside corner on one side & the outside arete on the outside for more varied routes - also a corner structure is much stronger & the two walls re-inforce each other. l would think a standard house foundation with a footing & a stem wall with very large anchor bolts poured into the concrete would be the way to go.

l would suggest finding actual plans or just building it twice as strong as it needs to be for safety & having it checked by a qualified inspector.

Ok l built a home outdoor climbing wall in my backyard. The first thing you need is a good foundation. Large stepping stones work or a cement foundation. Metolious has a great article on how to build a home climbing wall on their website metolious.com. However it will take very long to describe in detail how to build a climbing wall. You need to have alot of 2/4s and 3/4 inch plywood. Also lots of t-nuts. Hope this helps.
