A friend is considering climbing to Everest base camp to mark his 30th birthday.Some have suggested that going to base camp is hardly tricky and not all that impressive. Are they right ?

Climbing almost anything can be difficult if ur take the difficult route.. But depending who he or she intends to impress, they may not realize that.

l would like to offer a little insight via the book ''Into Thin Air'' by Jon Krakauer. l have ''always'' wanted to climb Everest & after this book that has changed completely.
He speaks about the commercialization of the climb & how this has changed the way the mountain is climbed, kind of dumbing down the main routes for the paying customer.
On the other had the deadliness of storms & inexperience, plus a little arrogance plays a serious role in the book, too.

Still, to help answer that question, have ur friend buy the book or check it out of the local library. It will give some perspective. There r more impressive climbs, by far, nearer, more challenging, more fun, more beautiful..

They are wrong if anyone knows anything about climbing everest they would know that just getting to base camp is difficult. My mom has a friend who is in perfect shape and has great conditioning. He said climbing to base camp was the hardest thing hes ever done. l would say go for it that would be an awesome birthday.

climbing to everests base camp is very difficult to some people, and somewhat difficult to others. Base camp lies at approximetly17,900 ft. There was a story of a mexican climber whos lungs filled up with oxygen do to the extreme thin air and altitude. Over all climbing to base camp is difficult, no easy task, u must train for it, good luck :)
