Is there anything l can do to prevent getting blisters on my right hand when l belay (besides wear gloves)? I am right handed and I've been getting blisters in between my thumb and index finger on my right hand just recently. Am l doing somthing wrong?

Use all your fingers. You will build up some tough skin after a while. But in the mean time there is no problem changing your grip on the rope so long as it is a firm grip and you always have one hand on the dead rope(the slack end).

Make sure you have a very sharp angle on the rope, because you should not have to grip very tightly, rather just tight enough to stay in control of the belay end of the rope. If it is still a problem add a second carabiner to your atc. That will create a lot more friction for you, guaranteed.

BTW it sounds like your climbing partner spends a lot of time ''Hang-dogging'' on the rope. Poor you! LOL!

There are several things:

1. You can use both hands and do not let the rope slide through your fingers, stop the rope with your left and slide your right down then loosen your left hand and move your right hand toward the belay device and repeat - the rope is never sliding through your hands.
2. Use an active belay device - like a Gri Gri - it will provide most of the friction and you wo not have to use your hands as much.
