l think that the best place to first try climbing is an indoor climbing gym - they will teach you how to belay, you can learn technique better by having your belayer helping you from the floor below, and it is a more controlled environment. Plus, they are in the yellow pages!
Many climbers prefer outdoor on real rock, but give the gym a try - you can even rent gear at most of them.
