K2 in Pakistan, the worlds second highest mountain, is commonly known as the hardest mountain in the world to climb. This is due to technical difficulty and objective danger combined with its immense height. It attracts the best climbers in the world each year and unfortunately claims many lives.

vinson massif 5140, over half the height of Everest, but with the added advantage of being close to the south pole.. l would say that would be difficult to climb

Any of the 7 summits are extremely difficult. Depending on the type of climbing skills you have any mountain can be the most difficult - but l would have to say K2 is the hardest/most challenging. l am NOT saying that K2 is one of the seven summits.

l guess this depends on what you mean by ''hardest''.

Of the high Himalayan peaks that would be K2 - while it is not the highest, it is recognized as being much more difficult than Everest. Far less people have summited K2 than Everst. But.. Ed Viesturs (one of America is greatest climbers) had to repeat Annapurna several times to summit because of avalanche conditions.

l agree that K2 in the Karakorum (Pakistan/China border) is generally considered to be the hardest mountain to climb. It is a highly exposed peak with many technical aspects. Additionally, there is a much greater difference in the altitude of the surrounding area making the climb from K2 is base camp much harder than from other high peaks. Unlike many other Himalayan peaks, it is not climbed as much as they r on an annual basis. Compared to Everest, which over 2000 people have climbed, less than 300 have climbed K2. Additionally, from the few stories I've read about K2 ascents, there does not seem to be the support network or the local climbing experts (ie Sherpas) in Pakistan. Climbing teams seem to have to rely on themselves to fix ropes & porter supplies much more than they have to on Everest & Lhotse.

However. New routes on climbed peaks & unclimbed peaks still exist. We just do not know about them yet. Until then.K2 has my vote.
