ive been training to do more pull ups now for ages im a rock climber so pull strength is really important ive been training for about 3 months now doing as many pull ups as l could for 8 sets 2 times a week and training by shoulders and back 3 times a week im also on a high protein diet i cant get past 5 pull ups though any suggestions? thanks

ok as a rock climber u should not be pulling so much with your arms but pushing with your legs but if u want a good exercise then bench and do an exercise called lat pull downs. then if u want move ur grip on the benching bar in closer (called a close grip bench) and reduce the weight and bench 3 sets of 10 as much weight as u can.

The problem with pull ups is it is ALL of ur body weight - which is not what u do climbing when ur legs r helping you. You need to use an ''assist'' to lower ur body weight. The other problem is u should not be using a ''bar'' - u should be using a climber training board or some climbing holds - so that u work on ur grip at the same time.
The best way to increase ur number of pull ups & to simulate actual climbing better is to make u weigh less - use ur harness & a pulley above ur pull up bar - tie a rope to ur harness & go through the pulley to some weights. Start with 40lbs & u should be able to do a lot more pull ups. As u get stronger & gain more endurance, u can remove some of the weight.
The problem with ''lat pull downs'' is that they do not use exactly the same muscles & u do not work on ur finger / grip strength - keep doing ur pull ups on a training board!

Hanging is the most important for climbing, not pull-ups. Also try lock-offs: do a pull up, then let go with one hand and try to stay up for a few seconds (take it easy so you do not hurt yourself).
l have no idea why you can not do more pull-ups, it must not be one of your natural talents!

Try a campus board, then you can do different pulls. If you just do pull ups, you only focus on one muscle group. The legs are just as important and probably do more work than arms. Arms are good for locking off and hanging but legs are the driving force. The other thing to train, are your fingers, the campus board and bouldering are the best for this. tape up you fingers first or you will pop your tendons. Dont get hung up (excuse the pun) on pull ups.
