Not from sea-level. l mean from the start of the climb/hike to the top.
Yes but everest Base camp is at an altutude of 5545m so the climb is actually only 3303m from there. ie the bottom of the mountain isnt at sea level.
Ah, Kilimanjaro. l was thinking along the lines of Mt Fuji

Believe it or not, the highest mountain is technically not Mount Everest. The highest mountain is actually a series of underwater mountains that can be as high as 7 miles! Mount Everest is technically the highest mountain on land though.

l understand what you are asking. Everest springs out of a range of high lands, Whereas if you consider mount Kilmanjaro, that appears to be one massive mountain that springs from the african plains. It is the highest free standing mountain in terms of height from its base ( 15,100ft ), its overall height from sea level is 19,340ft.

Mt Fuji is only 12,388 ft, but it is another example of what you asked.

McKinley is probably the highest from base to the summit. It lies on a plateau of 2000 ft, rising 18,000 ft to the summit (Everest lies on a 17,000 ft plateau). Kilimanjaro lies on a 4200 ft high plateau, rising over 15,000 ft to the summit.

McKinley climbers most commonly fly into the base camp at 7200 ft.giving 13,000 ft of climbing. Base camp on Everest is at about 17,500 ft, giving about 11,500 ft of climbing. ''Base camp'' on Kili is at about 5700 ft, giving 13,600 ft of climbing.

So.in terms of altitude gain from the start of the climb..Kili. In terms of rise from the plateau on which the mountain sets.Denali.

HOWEVER. l hiked up to the top of Telescope Peak, the highest summit in Death Valley National Park at 11,331 ft. We met people on top that had hiked up from the valley floor in a single day. The valley floor is 282 feet BELOW sea level. That is 11,600 feet IN A DAY. That is crazy!
