denum is not a good item of clothing to wear going mountain climbling as it is not a good insulator but why???

Denim is not very good because it retains any water that gets in it, or moisture that does. It keeps it close to your skin, and it makes you very cold. It is not wind resistant either, and that makes you colder as well. l would get some pants from G l Joes or RE l that would be better for mountain climbing.
Good Luck!

Any fabric made from cotton (like denim) is not a good choice for outdoor activites where u might get wet - either from rain or from sweating. Once cotton gets wet, it stays wet & it can hold many times its own weight of water which will make u very uncomfortable. Because of this, cotton dries VERY slowly. The only natural fiber that is any good outdoors is wool.

Synthetics (like nylon or polyester / fleece) will only hold a small fraction of their weight in water & therefore will dry very quickly. They r lighter, have better tear resistance, & better wind resistance. The only problem with them is that they smell when u sweat in them - but there r new treated fabrics that r better.

A good pair of nylon hiking pants, synthetic / wool blend socks, a synthetic shirt & light (1 pound) GoreTex jacket will be the best insurance that u r prepaired for what ever happens.

Good Luck

Tahoe T pretty much laid it all out. Take his advice.

l third what Tahoe said..can not add much else.

-Stay away from cotton!
-Have something warm/wind-resistant for the summits.
-Wool is heavy, but warm and does not trap body odor. They make some tech/wool blend shirts for bottom layers that are toasty warm, and fairly light.

Good luck.

Denim is made of cotton & as the old saying goes.Cotton kills.

When cotton gets wet it has NO insulating value (unlike wool or synthetics).

Once cotton gets wet, the fibers collapse against each other, leaving no loft. Loft in fibers holding air is what really makes various cloth types have insulation. Imagine taking a cotton ball & getting it wet.it gets really small because of the collapse of the fibers. Imagine doing the same thing with the synthetic stuffing from ur pillow. It does not collapse as much as the cotton ball. Cotton also retains the moisture for much longer than wool or synthetic fibers.
