Hi, I am in NZ for a while and can travel all over. Where is a good place to go for beginner/intermediate routes?

All around Queenstown which is very good for everything as well. There is an outstanding place just out of Christchurch towards on the Arthurs pass towards the West Coast

Mokau(north of New Plymouth) has some marvellous rock climbing areas and paragliding spots, the stretch of road north of Mokau has many rock climbing areas to do this. Also the Southern Alps are notorious for rock climbing enthusiasts,

l am a beginner intermediate climber so here r my places l have gone that l have found plenty of routes l can climb:-
a) Wanaka. Hospital Flats area. Get guide from local outdoors shop called Outdoor Sports in Queenstown. Beautiful place. Glacial.
b) Takaka - Paynes Ford at top of the south island about 4 hours drive from the Ferry. Slopey limestone, great atmosphere.
c) Waikato - use Bryce is climbing shop & lodge as a base & he will send u anywhere in the district (except Froggat where they charge u to climb). You wo not leave Bryce is without buying something! Ignimbrite.
d) Whanganui Bay - camping onsite pay Mere per night camping. Hard to find - go with a seasoned professional. Ignimbrite.

CastleRock is world famous for it’s spectacular Ignimbrite Rock formations & accessible, yet challenging, rock climbing. This is all within easy walking from the Lodge, Woolshed & camp-ground. CastleRock’s office can provide u with all the rock climbing information, guidebooks & weather forecasts while you’re here.

There r guided climbing & abseiling trips with professional instructors & all equipment included from $55 per person.

The crags in the area include: Wharepapa South, Froggatt Edge, Sheriden Hills, Bayleys Rd & Waipapa. They r able to cater for all climbers, with over 1000 bolted sport climbs from Grade 12-28 (US grades 5.4 to 5.13a) - enough to keep u busy for months if u have the time.

The Wharepapa crag (located only 200m from CastleRock Lodge) has 180 bolted climbing routes, 130 of which r grade 20 or lower (beginner to intermediate grades). There r 45 climbing routes in the Lower Tier that r fully set-up with pull-cords & permanent anchor chains. This means u can tie ur climbing rope on the pull-cord & pull it through the anchor mallion to form a top-rope. This is great as it means u can do 4-8 top-rope climbs in a morning, increasing ur skill level & getting a nice forearm pump on.
A park access fee is charged for day users just so u know. Froggatt Edge is 5km from the Lodge & has another 160 bolted routes & huge number of boulder problems.
No park access fee is charged on that.

Takaka - Paynes Ford - Nelson is the closest city, but be careful, once you visit Nelson, you may not want to leave.
