l am looking for food ideas for mountaineering expeditions.l would like ideas for dehydrated foods and/or foods that are easy to prepare using boiled water, and l am hoping for some variety.l am planning on prepacking these foods for easy use.l do not have a dehydrator, but am willing to buy one if you have some good ideas. Please do not recommend freeze dried foods or MRE's.Thanks in advance!

Go Freeze dried. l know thats not what you wanted to hear. l use Mountain House and Backpackers Pantry. Mix yourself up some trail mix if you feel the need.
Hope someone gives you the answer you want. l know when l ask a ''Q'' seldom do l get the answer l am looking for.

The freeze-dried food is light, but expensive and a little bulky. If you use them, you can add dehydrated vegatables or instant noodles / rice to make them go further.

You can also use the regular quick-boil noodle / rice dishes from the grocery store. l repackage them in a zip lock bag that l later use for trash or something else.

Good Luck

here r some ideas that r readily available at a grocery store:

Ramen soups
Cup a soups
Knorr dried soup mixes (tomato, vegetable, etc. - they require some cooking; the vegetable soup can also double as dried veggies to add to other stuff)
Cup a noodles
Noodle/pasta/rice dishes (Lipton/Knorr makes a lot of these)
Instant mashed potatoes (they come in a variety of flavors & l love to eat these for breakfast)
Instant oatmeal
Jerky (you can also add this to soups)
Trail mixes
Dry cereals or granola, powdered milk
Tea, Tang or powdered gatorade (for the sugar), instant coffee

You can fill up with lots of things u can by in the store.
try zatarain is red beans & rice.. great for you, filling & it has lots of protein. just boil..

the best thing is to dehydrate ur own foods. jerky is awesome.. & there r tons of online recipes.. backpacker.com also will have some ideas for you. u want to stay away from dehydrating meals with meat in them.. when u hydrate the meals, any meat included will be rubbery & will not hydrate like the rest of the food. if meat is a must, stick to jerky.. but u can make combinations of food to create a complete protein like Mexican, Brazilian, Medditerranean, etc., beans & rice.
have fun with ur food making!
