Can you tell me what the tallest mountains in the US to climb without special gear are?l really need to find out.Also, is Longs Peak in Colorado one of the tops?Thanks so much in advance!

Mt. Whitney would be one, it is the highest peak in the contiguous United States.

Elbert is the highest in Colorado. It is long, but not technical. l climbed it with no special gear in summer. Long is Peak is #14 in Colorado & most routes r generally Class III. l have not climbed it. People l know who have took rope in the event they needed it to link up, but they did not need it. Crampons, Ice Axe, Avy gear, & ropes would be advisable on any high peaks during the winter.

For Colorado climbs, pick up a copy of ''Colorado 14ers''. It is a pretty good guidebook to begin any high climbing in Colorado.

Blanca, Castle, Conundrum, Challenger, & Kit Carson r some other good 14ers that do not need technical gear. You will have to do some scrambling, but nothing serious.

Buy a guidebook, do some planning, & have fun. Good Luck!!

My favorite to climb without gear is the Class 4 / 5.0 route on Mt. Russell (14,000+) which is next to Mt. Whitney. It is a technical rock climbing route but which is so easy that I've never seen anyone use a rope - I've climbed it on ''rest'' days when camping at the base of Whitney.
