first you have to get out of CT, ha ha.but seriouslly the best mountain hiking in new england is in the White Mountains of new hampshire, especially around the presidential range...the adirondacks of new york state are great too, especially around the High Peaks/Lake Placid area

Your best bet would be to check out local gear shops and talk to the employees there. Alot of those places will teach intro courses to rock climbing, backpacking, mountaineering, etc. and this can be a good way to get the basics down, aswell as find other people you can go climbing with who are near your experience level.

Good luck.

There is some great trails in CT, but nothing terribly grueling, by climbing standards. Sleeping Giant in Hamden, across the street from Quinnipiac has some nice, light duty trails, as well as a couple fairly strenuous uphills at the head. There is a simple uphill walk to the tower, if you want to start slow. Bring a thermos and a light lunch so you can sit and enjoy the view. It is really pretty up there. Especially in the fall. Enjoy!

First, get a guide book for hiking & climbing for ur local area. l would suggest the ''Falcon Guide'' series of books - they will describe hiking routes (distance, vertical gain, etc) & climbing routes (where they are, difficulty, grade, gear needed, etc)

You could look for climbing classes at ur local community college or u could just start climbing & take a class at an indoor gym (good for winter conditioning & meeting other climbers that u might climb with in the summer)

l would also start with a book to learn about the techniques of technical rock climbing - the best is John Long is ''How to Rock Climb''

Also go to mountaineering web sites (like Summit Post) to learn more

Good Luck

well, first l suggest heading over to prime climb.. their very knowledgable, have a few walls, and 2 bouldering areas.. they can also teach you the basics of belaying. sleeping giant (hamden) has a few good trails, but it is better suited for hiking

It is kinda hard to do in CT. l am not terribly familiar with the area, but there r enough gear stores in ur area where u may be able to speak to some people knowledgeable about the sport. l kinda remember hearing something about some quarries. l think l read it in N'East magazine a few years ago.maybe it was in southern Mass??

If u live in western CT u can always take a drive over to New Paltz, NY. There r a number of climbing schools there where u can learn everything from basic rockcraft to advanced techniques.

There r a few places near Framingham & Northampton Mass too. l was taking a class to run challenge courses in that area this past spring. The guys getting certified for rock climbing instructors were climbing a few miles away while we stayed at the challenge course.

Aside from the 'Gunks in New Paltz. Check out schools or seminars in New Hampshire (Rumney or Franconia Notch) or in the Adirondacks too.
