Lets say it is not very steep and is not very muddy and slippery. Not many trees. In other words, there is no other disturbance. No extreme weather. All is well. How much can an average person climb in one hour? l desperately need an answer because l am writing something for November novel writing month! :D Help will be appreciated. Thanks in Advance!
EDIT: Okay, after reading these new questions , l guess l should add some more details.
* There is more to the book than this climbing episode. Two 13 year old are given the task to climb this hill. Deadline -1 hour.
* Actually, they are climbing from boulder to boulder, you know, pulling yourself up using ur hands, because they dont have ANY utilities or impliments which whill help them.
* Steepness - Because they are climbing from boulder to bouldeer or even hopping from boulder to boulder, which are at quite a helpful distance, l mean it doesnt make much difference. (sometimes they hop from to very close by coulders, sometimes they pul themselves up to a bit elevated boulder)
* afreshpath: l could not understand what did you mean by - Side of a hill. and Trail.
* actually there are two encumbraces - 1) a huge boulder rolls over and the children almost fall with it! 2) theres a difference of about 6 feet between the lasy boulder and the peak. Wayne: What is thumbs? Oh Cool thanks all you guyz! Thanks a lot! :D i will cut it down to around 800 feet so that there is no extra unneeded conflict! THANKS :D (Plz Vote, im unable to chose whos is the best Answer! :D

A good rule of thumb l use is to climb at a rate of 1000 feet of elevation every hour.

Is the climber walking a trail or going right up the side of the hill?
Trails tend to be placed along the side of a hill with less of an incline to facilitate hiking. Walking up a hiking trail with no encumbrances such as heavy packs, 750 to 1000 feet per hour is pretty good at a fast walk. If the hiker is doing some sightseeing, then slow that progress down a lot.
If the hiker/ climber is going right up the side of the hill & is in a bit of a hurry, 1500 feet per hour is a good pace but will tire him/her out quickly & they will work up a sweat even in cold weather.
The description of ''not very steep'' can be widely interpreted! In my case l would describe some hills that way but others would describe the same hill as extremely steep. The steepness of a hill can be different in different places. l tend to go up a hill along the spine or ridge where the going is not as great as hiking up the side of the hill.

Wayner is right - for easy climbing or boulder hopping about 1000ft per hour is a good guess as long as you are not carrying any weight - if you are carrying even 20% of your own weight you can cut that down to about 500ft per hour.
Good Luck

just walking is way easier than scrambling (climbing/jumping over boulders) and would take alot less time. i would say you could go about a mile or 2ish kilometres over boulders an hour. well l did :|
hope this helps
