mountain climbing or rock climbing? for stuff to climb in this weekend, l recommend bringing some sort of kahki/synthetic pants or shorts. l personally climbing most of the time in light kahki pants and roll up the cuffs. jeans and sport shorts = bad news bears in my opinion. other than that, l think the club is providing all the other gear for you.

then you should not be doing it. this is how people get killed and great places are shut down to the rest of us who take the time to gain the knowledge and attain the gear to make safe trips that we can come back from. either get some education about what you're going to do, or stay home and knit a damn sweater.

Do not listen to burnttoast! Obviously you're going w/ someone who is experienced in climbing. Depending on what type of climbing and how long/high you're going you will want to take a few things.

Proper clothing, water, energy snacks, water, socks, mole skin, water. l am guessing this is more of the hiking type of mountain climbing as opposed to the vertical climbing type?

If l knew more l could give ya better advice.

First and foremost, a mountain. Everything else is optional.

Know the mountain you aim to climb (Rocky,Mossy,Alpine, subalpine) and it will tell you what tools you must bring. Secure a map and use GPS. Get the services of a mountain guide. Mountaineering means less weight to carry. Purchase clothing that are light but will serve your purpose. Dont forget your stove, tent, cookset, headlamp, sleepingbag, medicines, etc. Plan your food and make a menu so as not to carry with you your entire kitchen. Use a hiking shoes that will suit the terrain.

l find it odd that the people u r climbing with could not give u some tips. If u r not climbing with anyone, then stay the heck home. l say this with no malice. l want people to climb.but learn how to do it from other (live) people, not a message board. Climbing is not something one should begin doing alone. (Rock or Mountaineering) Find a club or take a class before u try this. I've been climbing off-and-on for over 10 years & l am still learning things.

If what u r planning to do is actually non-technical climbing (more like hiking) then l suggest u pick up a hiking guidebook for the area u intend to visit. l could list a bunch of things to take, but a regionally specific guidebook will give u more detailed info on what gear u should have. (For example, on a peakbagging hike in the Adirondacks in October u will need different things than if u were to summit a Colorado14er in mid-July)

l do not suggest u do this alone either. Take some friends. You can help keep each other motivated & it is a lot safer.

Take a climbing class, buy a guidebook, take some friends, stay safe, have fun!
