l love mountaineering and climbing but these sort of people just ruin the sport especially at club level.

cuz they think theyre cooler than everyone else since they do something dangerous it is kinda like someone who is skis and everyone hates the guy who skis but he has like 5 like minded people thinking theyre cool too so they wallow in their miserable fake happiness, yeah theyre just fags, you gotta be chill and not be a jerk to people, oh and kudos to you cuz you're not a cocky bitch cuz you climb mountains :D not saying that meanly l eman it kudos

Yeah, there are some smug idiots in the climbing community, when l was on a climbing trip, there was another bunch of school kids near by, and their teacher was leading, this other climber who was on a different route said, rather loudly, ' l hope he falls'. l do not see why some people have to be obnoxious, you never seem to get it in kayaking.

l guess when u think of it, a sport where the goal is to stand on top of a mountain & feel like the king of the world is going to attract those kind of people!

l agree with you, & yes especially at club level. These people act like they own the mountain, usually under the guise of ''ethics''. Also some of these people r open about the fact that they want to discourage people from climbing so they can have the cliffs to themselves.

l guess the best we can do is lead by example right?

That cocky attitude prevales in other sports endeavours as well ie/ whitewater canoeing,kayaking.Led a novice group down a serious rapid and around a small waterfall once without mishap or portaging,met a large group of cockies at the bottom who all got dumped and spent the day retrieving possessions and drying clothes. We stopped had a swim around the falls and found out they left a day ahead of us,loved that one.

There is bad people in all walks of life & all sports. However, yes, u r right there r some idiots in the climbing world. l personally distance myself from anything like that. l climb for inner peace & l could not achieve that by acting like a prat.
It has always crossed my mind that in the next couple of years when l hopefully have a go at a 8000 metre peak how such people could effect things. l personally could not walk past someone dying & just leave them there, like some have on Everest. Even though l want sucess at all costs, l feel l must always be courteous to fellow climbers.

Yea, It is irritating, but u gotta just grit ur teeth & get through it. Would not want to become one of them. l am lucky enough to be near Appalachian State University, & everyone there seems to be a bit better about that kind of stuff. It does make me sad that people r using this sport to glorify themselves. l think that it is just a changing society, no one wants to be humble any more. People think that doing something extreme - rafting, climbing, mountaineering,- makes them awesome, so they do it. They r not actually doing it for enjoyment. It makes me feel like a hipocryte just saying this. As said above, lead by example. l almost feel that l am worse, because l am not being tolerant enough towards them. sorry
