top roping is where the rope is attached already at the top. Lead climbing is where u will place you're own protection. A lot of gyms, including mine, wo not let u lead climb without passing a course of some sort. A belayer is basically a climbing assistant. All they really do is hold the rope & keep the slack up so if u let go for any reason, u wont hit the ground.Bouldering is basically climbing without a rope. Most likely they wo not let u go so high. It is harder than it looks & you're arms r going to hurt when you're done. l would recommend renting shoes if available, they provide less slippage, & make you're foot an advantage versus tennis shoes. Climbing shoes typically will be small & u will want them small while u climb, just do not make them kill ur feet. Use ur feet, more specifically balance on ur toes while on the wall, u can use the toes to pivot on holds, & using ur feet wont make it like thrying to do a million one armed pull ups. Hope that helps. Good luck & have fun

First, if you're climbing (and not bouldering), u will need to rent a harness. Also, while most climbing gyms rent climbing shoes, u can get by on sneakers (especially if you're a first time climber). (Note, if u decide to rent shoes, bring socks -- better safe than suffering foot fungus.)
Top roping is when the rope is above you. (Think of a pulley system -- the climber on one end & the belayer on the other end.) Lead climbing is when the rope is below u (think of a vertical string -- the climber on the top end the belayer on the bottom end). A belayer is someone who can catch ur fall if u slip & can lower u when you're done with the climb.
A few pointers: 1) Never step on a rope; (2) Do not walk/hang about under a route that someone is climbing; (3) Use ur legs (they're stronger than ur arms); (4) When you're ready to be lowered, simply sit down on ur harness (like you're sitting on the floor) & use ur outstretched legs to walk down the wall as ur belayer lowers you; & (5) remember to always look up!
Have a great time & happy climbing!

First thing. Do not get anxious. Plan on having fun & chillin' out! Wear clothes that u can stretch in, but not baggy clothing. Baggy clothing will get in the way while climbing & make getting ur harness to fit right a pain. Your going to get a pair of tight fitting shoes, normally not worn with a sock. Bring a tight pair of socks or sock liners in case they make u wear socks. You will get sized for a harness. make sure someone who is trained & works at the place walks u through the steps & that u always double back the web through the buckle. Have them double check it! You will be top roping for ur first time, that is the rope goes from the belayers harness (belayer is the person on the ground with the rope & is responsible to lock the rope if u fall so u do not get messed up) to a bolted or slinged carabiner then back down to you. You will be tied in at the harness with a doubled figure 8 knot. Again, make sure someone qualified ties & double checks the knot. Usually u will have a seriies of commands. Once u r both tied in & double checked u will say ''on belay'' your belayer will double check that his locking caribiner is locked & he is ready to belay you. He will then say ''belay on'' then u will approach the climb you will say ''climbing'' then ur belayer will say ''climb on'' if he is ready. As u climb the belayer should keep the line tight so slack is not in ur way, but he should not be puling u up. If u want the line to be a bit looser say ''slack'' if u want some extra line pulled tighter say ''take'' if u think u r going to fall say ''falling'' or ''watch me'' then the belayer will know to lock u off so u do not fall far. Climbing rope has some stretch built into it, so when u fall, even if locked off u will drop a little. It is o.k. Climbing rope is made strong enought to pretty much hold up a cow during a fall. It will be too long winded to explain belaying & repelling, but they will go over it with u at the gym Have fun & pay attention. Climbing is an awesome sport!

Dont worry about it all before you go - you will pick it up, just start off by climbing -grab hold and go! Then move onto belaying for a friend - make sure someone helps you the first few times! You will be fine - it is a great sport - have fun and you will do just fine!
Good luck :-)

all indoor climbing is using a top rope safety line meaning the end of the rope is attached to u & the other end is at the belayer then it loops at the top most of the wall. then every time u climb the belayer pulls the rope so the if u fall u will not go straight to the floor but get suspended on the wall. the belayer is the one giving u instruction on where to go what to reach & where the next hold is. & he is reponsible for ur safety that u will not reach the floor when u fall.
for rock climbing.. the lead climber is the one responsible for making the route of the climb, he is also resposible for putting safety clips.
for 1st time wall climbers enjoy the climb & just keep on climbing familiarize yourself to what type of molds, how to hold the molds.
for wall climbing put ur body weight on ur legs & not in ur arms, ur arms is just for support & balance. always keep ur arms straight & not bent. keep ur body close to the wall.
enjoy!!!
